₪ solemn vigil
₪ solemn vigil
feel that i've got to blog about this.
tuned on the tv today for the state service of our former President Mr. Wee Kim Wee.
it rained this afternoon.
as though heaven's mourning the loss of Singapore's son.
now, i don't really know much about him honestly. the only presidents i had deep impressions of were Mr. S.R Nathan and Mr. Ong Teng Cheong.
but i've followed the papers closely these few days and they gave me insight of this remarkable Singporean who touched the hearts of many.
this was one man who went the extra mile, who cared for others with a geninue compassion and who always had a smile for everyone.
i was watching the service... and i can't refute that sense of respect i felt for him.
and it saddens me when i look back at what i've been doing all my life.
have i possess that humility that Mr Wee had, even just half of it?
do i remember everyone i've come across? to give them a smile? or just ask how they are?
have i at times, overlooked the feelings of others?
do i have utmost respect for my fellow man? the diligence, the integrity, the graciousness?
Mr. Wee was the epitome of a perfect gentleman.
rising from a humble begining to the highest office of the land, he never once forget his roots.
me?
i'm still concerned about how i look, waxing my hair every morning.
i wear my dislike blatantly for people i detest.
i seldom consider the feelings of others when i make a comment or poke fun at them, however unintentional it was.
and unless they are my friends, i'd never say hi or put on a smile whenever i see someone i don't know that well. that includes neighbours upstairs and down, teachers in school, hi-bye friends that hadn't made an impression on me.
and Mr. Wee even remembered his Japanese chauffeur when he was Ambassador to Japan.
we pay attention to people who are close to us. close to our heart.
but this was one man who showered care and concern for everyone he came across..how many of us could actually do that? do we remember to make small chat with the auntie in the canteen selling us our lunch everyday? do we say hi or make a wave at the bus driver that fetches us from one point to another? or jus a friendly nod or a warm smile?
and here i am, sending out testimonials on friendster to people i hafen see or heard from for a long time...but it's a start.
and how many of us can say we lived our life to the fullest? if i'm to die the very next moment, i'd go with regrets. i can't sae that i've done everything that should be done in my life. Mr. Wee was a enthusiastic badminton player, an avid newspaper reporter, a passionate supporter of charity and in more ways than one, contributed to society.
the things he did was something many of us would have to spend lifetimes to acheive.
but he did it.
that's something we can draw our lessons from, that diligence, that passion, that humilty.
i'm start to re-evaluate the ways i lead my life.
and this is what the passing of the former President tells me to.
to look at my principles, my ideals again.
they said Mr Wee was the right person for the right job and at the right time, during that period of rife with communism, of the Indonesian confrontation. well, people were right.
but i feel that, in our times..in such a complex world like ours..
we need more men like Mr. Wee
