₪ alternate futures. alternate realities
₪ alternate futures. alternate realities
few days back during the Christmas period, there's this veryX5 old film shown over cable.
The title's It's a Wonderful Life.
There's this man, George Bailey, who as a child dreamt of nothing but exotic locations and adventurous travels to foreign lands. But now he's a family man, a father and a husband. He has left behind his silly bachelor notions, but they still come back to haunt him. Bailey owns the town's Bank, left to him by his father.
The cranky Mr. Potter wants complete monopoly over the town, and all that stands in his way is Bailey and his little bank. But Bailey, with an inner disgust and hatred towards Potter brewing since his childhood days, refuses to cave in and give it all away.
Then one day, George's absentminded and quite eccentric uncle, misplaces a large sum of money, leaving George hopeless and Potter with a serious advantage. After blowing up at his wife and kids at home, George gets drunk at a local bar, gets scorned at by a schoolteacher's wife, and left dazed and confused, walking through the snowy town at night during the happy Christmas season without a hope in the world.
Battered and delirious, thinking back over his apparently pointless and wasted life, he contemplates suicide. He prays to God and wishes that he had never existed. Which is why Clarence, an angel comes down from heaven to sort things out and answer his prayer.
Clarence then wiped out his entire past and showed George what life would be without him
George considers suicide as a way of escaping his problems without really thinking over the possible outcomes given his final choice. He looks back upon his life as wasted potential; he wanted to become an adventurer, break his family's small-town tradition and become something huge. Mentally scanning his life to the point in time when he stands on that bridge, George Bailey believes that he has simply and truly created a waste of space.
He's ready to end his (assumed) pointless life when his entire point of view is wholly altered by the power of God.
George suddenly realizes that though he never lived out his boyhood fantasies, he did so much more than he ever dreamed of. He saved his brother's life, which resulted in a huge impact in later years; he made an influence in the lives of others and brought peace and harmony to an otherwise small town by prevailing at the requests of Mr. Potter; he married a beautiful wife and had children, all of whom will no doubt have some measure of significance later in the world.
a few weeks back, i was like telling her, if God plans everything for us and the future is already drawn up and stuff, then wat are we? actors and actresses on a grand stage, playing out our indiviual roles in accordance to a pre-destined script?
upon thinking back now, i tink i was maybe like half-right.
yes, everything is drawn up and everything is already planned. However, there are many alternate choices in this script that will lead to different endings of your stories.
There are many combinations of events and incidents that lead us to different chapters and different endings. These events might vary in importance but they change the course of future in more ways than one.
For example, say that the Cold War didn't end..and Americans and Russians were shoving nuclear bombs in each other's face..what will the world be like now? Will we be living life like we do now? Or something else?
Or...say a child is playing along the shores of Phuket. had the tsunami didn't devour him, what significance will he play in the world todae if he survived? he might be a...perhaps...a tsunami-awareness activist ?
And..on a minor scale, say you are weighing at 60 kg and you want to lose weight. there's a cupcake on the table and you want it very much. If you ate it, you will be like 62 kg..but had you not ate it, then maebe you would haf less sugar & fats in your system.
When you think about it we are all here, because events lined up in a very specific way. Your parents were together at just the right moment to conceive you and they were put in that time and place by all of the bigger moments and choices they made in their lives. This type of thing isn't in a vacuum. The choices and events that put them in that time and place are affected by the greater flow of history.
In a way, you are where you are because of the thousands of years that Man has been on the Earth.
What i am trying to say is that a slight shift or change in what you do will alter everything. Be it the history or the future. If we look at it closely enough, what we do is something like a mammoth butterfly effect.
A butterfly flaps it's wings in America and the slight breeze by that turns into a monsoon in Asia. One ripple in the time stream would lead to a wave where everything would be different as a result of it.
Everything becomes clearer now.
Everyone has his or her place on this planet, each holding his/her significance in the world we live in. We are inside this delicate chain, where every action holds a possible consequence and every alternate choice churns out many alternate events as a result.
We feel sad when people depart for the Light. We are depressed by own mortality..(this is also a consequence..remember Adam+Eve and the apple?)
Some die young, others at old age.
We feel sad, but if we recognised the significance of their roles and see how our stories are weaved intricately with theirs, then we;ll understand and marvel, this delicate balance people up above have drawn up.
Billions of stories criss-crossing by the minute, and lighting up worlds with significance, history making and future changing with zillions of choice made...i guess if everyone's story is shown over HBO or Hallmark..over thousands of channels...we might then see it with our own eyes, how at some point we are separated into different directions and then coming back together again.
guess i was pretty wrong to like...give the idea as though we were mindless minions playing out our roles in a predestined script by God
We are still tiny little pinkskins, playing out our roles in a predestinied script. what separate us from being mindless minions in an intricate plan is because we were bestowed with something He gave us.
Choice.
